Mangrove Planting

China Bay, Trincomalee

10th October 2024

Building on Oceanpick’s ongoing commitment to coastal ecosystem restoration, an additional 500 mangrove propagules were planted at Cat Cove Bay, China Bay, in partnership with the Forest Department of Sri Lanka. This effort focused on strengthening previously restored stretches while expanding mangrove coverage in vulnerable shoreline areas. Mangroves play a critical role in protecting coastlines from erosion, improving water quality, and providing safe nursery habitats for fish, crabs, and other marine species that support local fisheries.
By continuing restoration in the same location, the project moves beyond one-time planting and contributes toward building a denser, more resilient mangrove belt. Over time, these habitats will not only support biodiversity but also act as natural carbon sinks, capturing and storing “blue carbon” that helps mitigate the impacts of climate change. The activity also reinforces the importance of collaborative conservation, demonstrating how partnerships between the private sector and government institutions can create lasting environmental value.

Why It Matters

  • Strengthens natural coastal defenses that protect fisheries ecosystems linked to Oceanpick’s value chain
  • Expands blue carbon habitats, supporting long-term climate resilience
  • Reinforces Oceanpick’s role as an active partner in national ecosystem restoration efforts
  • Builds continuity in restoration by enhancing previously planted areas

Key activities

  • Partnered with the Forest Department of Sri Lanka for technical expertise and implementation guidance
  • Planted 500 mangrove propagules in identified restoration zones at Cat Cove Bay
  • Applied recommended planting methods to improve propagule survival
  • Strengthened existing restoration areas to promote habitat continuity

Project Impacts

  • Increased mangrove density leading to stronger shoreline stabilization
  • Enhanced nursery habitats support marine biodiversity and fish population recovery
  • Greater long-term carbon sequestration potential through expanded mangrove coverage
  • Improved ecosystem resilience against storms and tidal impacts
