Mangrove Planting

China Bay, Trincomalee

29 Jul 2024

Together with MEPA and local groups, Oceanpick supported planting nearly 400 mangrove plants/propagules in Cat Cove Bay, China Bay, as part of restoring degraded coastal edges. This wasn’t just about planting and leaving, it was about rebuilding a living coastal shield. Mangroves are powerful in quiet ways. They hold the shoreline together, reduce erosion, provide nursery habitats where young fish and crabs can grow safely, and store “blue carbon” that helps fight climate change. The day also served as an awareness moment, helping participants understand why mangrove areas should be protected long after the photo is taken. With community involvement, the project becomes something people feel responsible for, improving survival rates and long-term protection.

Why It Matters

  • Mangroves strengthen coastal resilience and protect fisheries nursery habitats
  • Blue carbon ecosystems support Oceanpick’s climate-responsible positioning
  • Community-linked restoration builds long-term stewardship and survival rates

Project Impacts

  • Improved shoreline stabilization and reduced erosion risk
  • Long-term increase in biodiversity and fish nursery habitat quality
  • Carbon sequestration benefits through blue carbon stock growth

Key activities

  • Site restoration planting with MEPA and local partners
  • Awareness on mangrove value and protection
  • Community involvement to encourage post-planting care and survival
