Sambaltivu Mangrove Restoration
Oceanpick is proud to launch a transformative Blue Carbon Initiative aimed at restoring 2 hectares of mangroves in Sambalathiwe, a vital step in our journey toward Net Zero emissions and climate-smart aquaculture. This project is designed to offset Oceanpick’s operational greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through nature-based carbon sequestration, while simultaneously enhancing the climate resilience of Sri Lanka’s vulnerable coastal zones. Mangroves are among the most effective natural carbon sinks, capable of storing up to 10 times more carbon per hectare than terrestrial forests.
Project Highlights
- Restoration of 2 hectares of mangroves in Sambalathiwe
- Carbon offsetting aligned with Oceanpick’s verified GHG inventory and Net Zero roadmap
- Ecosystem regeneration to support biodiversity and sustainable fisheries
- Coastal protection against erosion, storm surges, and sea-level rise
- Partnership with Trincomalee Forest Department, with location finalized and proposal submitted for approval
This initiative is more than a carbon strategy—it’s a commitment to green innovation, community engagement, and long-term environmental stewardship. By investing in blue carbon solutions, Oceanpick is helping to restore balance between industry and nature, while setting a benchmark for responsible aquaculture in Sri Lanka.
