Free Health Camp for Fisheries Communities
Oceanpick recently conducted a free health camp for fisheries communities in collaboration with the Medical Officer of Health (MOH) Office, Trincomalee, reaffirming our commitment to holistic sustainability that includes community health and welfare. This outreach program provided essential medical services, health screenings, and preventive care to families living and working in coastal areas—many of whom are directly connected to Sri Lanka’s marine economy. By partnering with the MOH Office, we ensured professional healthcare delivery and strengthened ties with local public health authorities.
Objectives
- Improves access to healthcare for underserved coastal communities
- Supports the well-being of fisheries workers and their families
- Builds trust and collaboration between Oceanpick and local stakeholders
- Reinforces our ESG commitment to social responsibility and inclusive development
What We Did
- Conducted a non-communicable disease (NCD) screening camp for ~60 people covering diabetes (random/fasting glucose), BMI/waist ratio, and blood pressure.
- Co-organized with Ceylon Fisheries Harbour Corporation (CFHC) and the fisheries community in Cod Bay, open to Oceanpick employees, harbour workers, and fishers’ families.
- Provided on-site counseling on diet, activity, tobacco/alcohol risk, and referral slips for follow-up at MOH/clinic.
Why It Matters
- NCDs (diabetes, hypertension, obesity) are the main health burden in working-age adults and can silently reduce productivity and income.
- Early detection + referral prevents complications (heart, stroke, kidney, vision) and reduces medical costs for families.
- Taking screening to the harbour lowers access barriers (time, travel) for fishers and casual workers.
Possible Outcomes / Impact
- At-risk individuals identified, high BP/glucose cases flagged, immediate lifestyle guidance given and improved health awareness among crews and families.
- Workforce/community benefit: Healthier, more reliable crews, stronger trust between Oceanpick, CFHC, and the fishing community.
Relevant SDGs
- SDG 3 – Good Health & Well-Being (NCD prevention and health promotion).
- SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals (company–CFHC–fisheries community collaboration).
