World Mangrove Day

Thambalagamuwa Coastline
28 Jul 2026

On World Mangrove Day, Oceanpick proudly joined hands with the Sri Lanka Forest Department, Norlanka (Pvt) Ltd, NRC, and the students of Sampaltivu Tamil School to mark the occasion with purpose and action.

We planted a portion of 300 Lumnitzera racemosa mangrove saplings, with the remainder to be planted once climate conditions are favourable. This marks our first tangible step in a journey to reforest a full 1-hectare stretch of coastline — a direct follow-up to our initial nursery planning visit in February 2026.

Alongside the planting, our team and students led a coastal cleanup of the surrounding area, removing waste and restoring the natural beauty of the site. It was especially meaningful to see the students gain hands-on learning and connect with the importance of coastal ecosystems.

Why this matters
to Oceanpick

  • Translates Oceanpick’s blue carbon strategy into tangible, on-the-ground restoration action.
  • Lumnitzera racemosa’s >90% survival rate makes this a highly resilient foundation for the 1-hectare reforestation goal.
  • Mangroves provide critical carbon sequestration, coastal protection, and marine habitat benefits that directly support Oceanpick’s operating environment.
  • Engaging students creates a lasting legacy of environmental stewardship in the local community.
