Blue Carbon and Climate Change
We support nature-based climate action by strengthening coastal ecosystems that naturally protect shorelines and store carbon. Through activities like mangrove restoration (and future-focused ecosystem projects such as seaweed cultivation), we contribute to expanding Sri Lanka’s “blue carbon” landscapes, habitats that absorb and store carbon while also supporting biodiversity and fisheries. These ecosystems are powerful because they do two jobs at once, they help fight climate change and they improve the health of the ocean environment that communities rely on for food and income.
What matters most is that restoration is not just planting, it’s building long-term survival and stewardship. When communities participate, the work becomes shared responsibility, and young plants are more likely to be protected and cared for. Over time, these initiatives strengthen storm buffering, reduce erosion, improve nursery habitats for fish and crabs, and build climate resilience where it’s needed most, along Sri Lanka’s coastline. Our role is to keep these efforts practical, local, and consistent, so ecosystem restoration becomes a living, growing asset for the future.
