World Fisheries Day 2024

Nov 19, 2024

Fishing as one of humanity’s oldest professions, which has been profoundly altered in recent years. Modern fishing has drifted towards “predatory practices and technology” that undermines sustainable practices. This imbalance has taken a toll on the marine ecosystem and the communities that depend on it.

World fisheries day is observed on 21st of November each year. Fisheries play a vital role in global food security and nutrition, providing over 20% of the animal protein intake for nearly 3 billion people worldwide. However, overfishing, climate change, and pollution have posed significant threats to the sustainability of fisheries, endangering marine ecosystems and the livelihoods of fishers.

With over 58 million people employed in fisheries and aquaculture worldwide, World Fisheries Day reminds us of the shared responsibility to protect our aquatic resources for the benefit of current and future generations. It is a call for action for governments, organizations, and individuals to ensure the sustainability of fisheries worldwide.

This year’s theme “Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures” highlights the importance of sustainable fishing on World Fisheries Day.  This global event is celebrated annually to highlight the importance of sustainable fisheries management and to draw attention to the crucial role of small-scale fishers in ensuring food security and livelihoods for millions around the world.

The history of the world fisheries day dates back to 1997 when small-scale fisher folk from around the world came together in New Delhi for the World Forum of Fish Harvesters & Fish Workers. At the forum, representatives from 18 countries signed a declaration to support sustainable fishing practices and policies. The World Forum of Fisher Peoples (WFFP) has celebrated World Fisheries Day since then.

Since its inception, this day has played a pivotal role in raising global awareness about the critical role of fisheries in food security, nutrition, and livelihoods. It has also been a platform for promoting responsible fishery management practices, addressing critical challenges such as overfishing, illegal fishing, pollution and climate change impacts.

Key highlights include:

  • Sustainable Fishing Practices: Advocating for methods that maintain fish stocks and marine health.
  • Community Empowerment: Highlighting the role of small-scale fisheries, which employ around 90% of fishers globally.
  • Eco-Friendly Innovations: Encouraging the adoption of technologies and policies that minimize environmental impact.
  • Global Livelihoods: Millions of people worldwide rely on fisheries for their income, especially in coastal and developing regions.
  • Food Security: Fish provides essential protein and micronutrients to billions globally, making it a vital food source.
  • Marine Ecosystems: Sustainable fishing is essential to prevent overfishing and protect aquatic biodiversity, ensuring long-term ecological balance.

How can we participate:

  • Eating more fish which are from sustainable sources
  • Taking care of rivers, dams, and the sea, which are important habitats for fish and aquatic organisms
  • Support sustainable seafood, reduce marine pollution, and advocate for policies that protect aquatic ecosystems

This year, Oceanpick, along with Codbay, Trincomalee Fisheries Department, and Regional Public Health Inspector, proudly conduct an awareness program for our fisheries community stakeholders. This will be a significant move to raise awareness on very critical topics such as illegal fishing, harbour rules and regulations, boating safety, and how to maintain good biosecurity practices. The program will also cover disease awareness to help participants protect marine life and their livelihoods.

Through this awareness programme, we aim to enhance community involvement for sustainable fishing and a healthy fisheries sector.

This global celebration of World Fisheries Day emphasizes the pivotal role played by small-scale fishers in safeguarding food security and livelihoods for millions worldwide. It serves as a reminder to prioritize responsible practices, ensuring the well-being of aquatic ecosystems and supporting the vital contribution of fisheries to the nourishment of communities across the globe.
